The Valiant does not have the genteel pretensions of the Silver
Dragon. It's a "rough and ready" sort of place, catering as it does
for the boatmen who work the river - who themselves seem to be a rough and
ready lot, though friendly enough. The two rooms that we are allocated are
clean and comfortable (though fairly basic), which is the main thing. Even
better, they are cheap. We wonder if we should stay here for a while, as
it's off the beaten track for road traffic and Gustav's men may not think
of looking for us here. When we go down for dinner, it proves to be
substantial and good.
So we are all in a good mood. But it swiftly evaporates midway through the meal, when two men dining at the next table, who have got through a bottle of wine a head, make a pass at Moula and myself. Initially we try to ignore them. But then one of them says: "Why don't you come upstairs for a bit of fun? Whatever those two are paying you, we'll pay you double." That is more than Teran and John can stand. They get to their feet, and the two drunks do the same, swaying slightly.
