Where to Go?

So, as she remonstrates with him, her back turned to me for the moment, I grab a heavy fruit bowl and bring it down hard on her head. The bowl shatters, but it does the desired job of knocking her unconscious.

John looks startled for a moment, then says: "Good work." He drags her fully inside my room. There is a fruit knife in the room, which we use to cut bed linen into strips so that we can bind and gag her. It probably won't restrain her for very long after she comes round, but hopefully Teran will soon be back.

While we wait for Teran, I discuss with John where we should go. "I wonder if at this hour there'll be a duty officer at the Ministry of Law who can tell us where to find Cornelius or one of his colleagues," I say. "Or if there'll only be a guard or nightwatchman."

"Going to the Ministry of Law would be a big mistake," John says. "Once the alarm is raised - which will happen almost as soon as we leave, since we can't kill or restrain everyone in the brothel - Gustav will quickly send some of his men to the building to look out for you, as it's where he will expect you to go. Though we could probably get there before them, they would be able to pick you up before Cornelius could arrive on the scene and arrange protection for you. Perhaps in a week or so, when the search for you has tailed off, you might risk going there. Or you might try to get a message to Cornelius, sent with someone who they won't recognise."

"So where am I to go? And what about you and Teran? Gustav will be looking for you as well. I don't want you to kill the bouncers - they aren't bad guys really - but even if you killed them Madam Scarlet and some of the girls could identify you."

1. "I know somewhere in the city where we'd be safe."
2. "We'll have to disguise ourselves, though your pregnancy will be hard to hide."
3. "You can't travel too far in your condition, but there's a small town about ten miles away. I suggest that we go there."
4. "The only way to protect you is for us to throw ourselves on the mercy of Gustav's main rival as a gang boss."
5. Before he can answer, Teran returns.
6. Before he can answer,Moula shows up at my door. "I overheard what you're planning, and I understand. Please, take me with you!"
7. The client whom Madam Scarlet referred to has become fed up with waiting, and comes to my room (presumably having found out from one of the other girls where it is).
