Staying on does seem the more sensible option, given the distance and my
financial situation, but I'm still scared that I'll be discovered. If
Gustav finds the page in his ledger missing, he'll know exactly where to
look first.
An idea springs to my mind, and after a minute of searching, I find what I need - more paper. It happens to be a stack of invitations that the doorman collected from guests as they enter. I take one off the top, fold it up, and put it in my shoe replacing the ledger page. This way, if I am searched, he won't find the page straight away, and may be inclined to believe my excuse for having paper in my shoe. I'll need to hide the page somewhere else, preferably somewhere where I can retrive it easily on my way out, but that Gustav wouldn't think to search. I decide not to hide it in the bar area, since that's the next place he's likely to look. After a few minutes of searching, I settle on a large decorative clay vase in the foyer just inside the main door, far enough away from the party area that it's not obvious. I make it back to the party room just in time, as moments later Gustav re-enters the room. He beckons me over to him and says:
