Gustav continues: "Those two young fools can continue to act as barmen for
a while. Doing something useful for a change will be good for them."
I'm relieved that, judging by what he has said, he doesn't appear to have noticed the missing page. At the same time I'm worried that, in his own home, he may want to go rather farther than he did at the club. I suppose that if the worst came to the worst I could walk out. After all, I already have obtained the evidence that I wanted (so long as I can pick it up again unobserved). But walking out could get the club into trouble, which I would feel rather guilty about, and it would also mean that I wouldn't get paid for my evening's work. But my biggest problem would be the one that dissuaded me from slipping away just now: having to walk a long way home on my own in the dark, for I doubt that in the circumstances Gustav would provide a coach for me. So I walk over with him to the table where he had been sitting with a few of his cronies. He sits and then points at his lap. I gingerly take my place there.
