I could probably slip out of the house without being spotted. But this
place is quite a long way from where I'm
staying. It was a fifteen minute coach ride, which probably equates to an
hour on foot. I'm not sure that I could find my way back, and also I could
be at risk travelling back so late unaccompanied. That would especially be
the case as I would be wearing the skimpy barmaid outfit. I feel that it
would be too
dangerous to go back to the room where my regular clothes are and put them
on, as my exit would have to be via the bar and the partygoers would
realise that something was wrong if they saw me not in my barmaid gear.
Also if by
any chance Gustav doesn't find that a sheet is missing from his ledger,
and isn't sure of my "guilt", then running off would mean that he was no
longer in any doubt.
He knows where I work, and I told Marco where I was staying (perhaps a mistake). I don't know how far Cornelius could go in hiding or protecting me. In any case, I won't be able to contact him till the morning. I have no money with me at all. Because it's a party, I haven't received any tips, and Gustav wasn't going to pay me till the end of the evening. I suppose I could go back to the inn, collect my key from the night porter, go to my room and get what money I have, and find another place to spend the rest of the night. Then I could go to see Cornelius first thing in the morning.
