I rummage through the unlocked desk, taking care not to disturb too much.
I remove a few scrolls and carefully unfurl them. The study's dim
lighting isn't ideal for reading, and the parchment that is written upon
is brown, faded and sometimes hard to read. My eyesight isn't perfect,
and I usually like a lot of light when I read. But, I make do as best I
can.
After about twenty minutes of seraching, I start to wonder if I will find anything. Most of what I've seen so far are mundane contracts and business records. Then, I catch a lucky break. At the bottom of the last drawer, hidden and out of sight, is a small, leather-bound book. opening it, I see it is a ledger of sorts, detailing payments made to one of Gustav's businesses for "protection". This could be all the evidence I need that Gustav is involved in the protection racket that Cornelius told me about. Looking at the ledger, I can see they are extorting a large sum of money from dozens of local businesses each month, all under veiled threats from Gustav's organization. I wonder if I will be taken at my word, or if I should take a page or two out of the book, to present to Cornelius as evidence.
