"That lightweight silk should only take about half an hour to dry," Gustav
adds. "Those two young idiots should be able to cope for that long. Come
with me."
He shows me to his private study, a very comfortable room with wood panelling and a thick carpet, then tells me to wait while he goes to get me a robe. There is a fire burning in the fireplace, even though it is not a cold day. It has a guard that I will be able to hang my costume over to dry. In the centre of the room is a large desk, with a comfortable-looking chair behind it. The desktop is clear of papers; all it contains is an inkwell, a pen and a blotter. A bookcase stands against one wall. Through its glass door I can see that it contains a mixture of books and box-files. It occurs to me that I've been lucky enough to be given a golden opportunity. I'll have thirty minutes in this room to see if I can find anything incriminating. No sooner have I thought this than Gustav returns wil a maroon bathrobe draped over one arm. "Here you are," he says. "You can wear this whilst you wait for your outfit to dry. Nobody should disturb you in here." I thank him and he leaves. Though the door has a keyhole, there is no sign of the key, so I can't lock the door from the inside. I hope that Gustav was right that I won't be disturbed. I quickly slip off my costume and put on the bathrobe, tying its cord about my waist. Being intended for a man, presumably Gustav, it is rather long on me, almost reaching the floor. Then I hang my discarded skirt and top over the fireguard to dry. That taken care of, I turn my attention to the desk drawers and the bookcase.
