Taking Some Evidence

The Black Void - Episode 2949

I carefully tear out a sheet relating to payments made over a year ago, in the hope that Gustav will not miss such an old page. My costume offers little scope for concealment, so I decide that the best hiding place will be in one of my shoes. I fold up the sheet and slip it in between the sole of the shoe and my foot. Then, as nearly as I can, I put everything back the way that I found it.

I have rather lost track of time, and when I look at the grandfather clock in the corner of the room I see that 25 minutes have passed. (Grandfather clocks seem to be the only ones that have yet been developed here, and I imagine that they are expensive items.) It's about time that I returned to my duties, if Gustav or one of his staff isn't to come looking for me. Always assuming that my outfit is dry by now, of course. I check and determine that it is.

I remove my shoes, as it's much easier to change when not wearing them. Then I take off the bathrobe and put on the skirt. I am just about to put on the top when the door opens. Unfortunately, without thinking I turn to face the door to see who it is, rather than turning my back on it.

  1. It turns out to be one of Gustav's servants, sent to see how much longer I am going to be. He seems even more embarrassed than I am,
  2. It's Gustav. "Very nice," he says with a grin. "Perhaps you should carry on like that." I'm not quite sure whether or not he is joking.
  3. It's Gustav. "Very nice," he says with a grin. But then his gaze takes in my discarded shoes, with the folded sheet of paper in one of them clearly visible. "What's that?" he asks.
