No Answer at the Seventh House

There's no answer, just like with the Maxwell's house. However, the front
door of this strange new home is unlocked. He opens the door slowly and
steps inside into a hallway. The first thing he notices is that the
decoration is not very inspired - the walls, ceiling and even the carpet
are a bland cream colour. He also notices that the walls seemed to be
bereft of any personal touches such as photos of family members or
paintings of landscapes. "Hello, is there anyone here?" he calls. No
reply, just the same eerie silence. Puzzled, Jacques decides to investigate further. There's a door to his left and a door to his right. Ahead of him against the left wall is a set of cream-carpeted stairs. To the right, the hallway runs on a little further before terminating in a door. He assumes this would lead him to the kitchen. Where should he go first?
