Nadia brings the tankard down with surprising strength and speed for such
a small woman. It impact's Maris' head with a strangely satisfying
thunk. Maris slumps forward, unconscious, the back of his head
leaking blood. I sidestep as he falls forward, directly where I was
standing moments before.
"Nice hit!" I compliment Nadia. She nods and winks, holding up the tankard triumphantly. "In my line of work, a girl's got to be able to take care of herself. I've ended more than a few barfights with a whack from one of these." I find myself reaching down and picking up Maris' sword. Looking at his unconscious form, I think about how easy it would be to finish him off, ending this once and for all. But I just can't bring myself to do it, despite the threat he will pose once he awakens. "What do you think we should do with him?" I ask. Nadia suggests dragging him downstairs to the wine cellar. It's underground, so he won't be able to call for help, and we can bar the door so he won't be able to escape. I agree with this plan, and, with some effort, we manage to drag him down to the cold, dark cellar. We tie his hands and ankles with some rope as an added measure. Then, returning to the main bar area, we lock the door and blockade it with some large furniture. (a chest from one of the guest rooms, which was a good deal heavier than Maris himself was) We stop to rest from our exertions, both of us sweating and out of breath. "I'm concerned about Maris' henchmen." I tell Nadia. "It's not like him to come after me alone, and I doubt all his men were taken out in that fight with those bounty hunters." "Yeah, but if we stay here, they'll probably come looking for him. Plus, Zal's not going to come back here, at least not right away. We have to get to the monastary." Her logic makes sense, so I agree and we again set off, leaving the tavern and the trapped Maris behind us.
