For once, something goes according to plan, and we reach the Baran
Monastery without incident. Ideally I would have preferred a convent, as I
wonder how I will fit in amongst a group of monks. Still, if all goes well
I should only be here a few hours before Zal turns up with Don. Anyway
beggars can't be choosers.
"This woman asks for sanctuary," Nadia tells the monk who is on doorkeeper duty. "Can she not speak for herself?" the monk asks. "She is a foreigner, and does not know what she should say in this situation." "Does she not speak our tongue?" "Yes I do," I say, feeling it's about time that I spoke for myself. Nadia means well, but I sense that she may have antagonised the monk by speaking for me. "Good. What is your name?" "Ilsa." "Have you committed any serious crime in this land within the last year? If you have, then we cannot give you sanctuary. You must swear to the truth of your answer." "I have not, I swear." He looks at me intently as I answer, as if to judge my truthfulness by my expression. Apparently satisfied, he says: "You may enter." He turns to Nadia. "Do you wish for sanctuary too?" Nadia shakes her head, a gesture that apparently means the same here as it does back home. "I should go back to the inn," she tells me. "If Teran shows up there, I'll be able to tell him where you are." "What if Maris gets free, or his friends make an appearance?" "Maris can't get out of the cellar, and if his friends show up I'll just tell them that he has been and gone, having found no trace of you. Good luck!" With the monk starting to show signs of impatience, she kisses me on the cheek, then turns and leaves.
