Cornered

I pick up a bar-stool and throw it at Maris, but he easily dodges. Then I try chucking a heavy pewter tankard at him, but I have no better luck with that. Before long, he has me backed into a corner. He grins evilly at me. "Remove your cloak and drop it on the floor," he orders. "Wouldn't want you to have any weapons hidden under it."

I do as I am told. "I liked your previous outfit better," he says once my dress is revealed.

"It's upstairs if you'd like me to change," I say, hoping to buy a little time.

1. He's too canny to fall for that, though.
2. "Good idea," he says.
3. I try not to show through any change in my expression that I can see Nadia, who has apparently summoned up some courage, creeping up behind him, with a heavy tankard in her hand ready to bring down on his skull.
4. Teran shows up in the nick of time.
