That comes as very unwelcome news, of course. At least Maris has seemingly
decided that it would be wise to tell me the truth. He might instead have
sufficiently feared my reaction to the news to think it safer to deny all
knowledge of Don's whereabouts.
I wonder if we have enough money to buy Don his freedom. If not, can we hope to rescue him from what must surely be a heavily guarded facility? "Do you know which mine?" Teran asks Maris. "No. I wasn't interested in that. You would have to ask the man that I sold him to. The outfit that he buys slaves for operates several mines." "What's his name and where can we find him?" "He's called Yunis. I don't know where he lives, but I know which tavern he usually drinks in: The Crescent Moon." Teran lowers his blade. "Thank you," he says. "In the circumstances, I don't propose to pay you for the information. Be grateful that I am leaving your head attached to your body." I'm worried about what we should do with Maris. If he's left to his own devices, I'm afraid that out of revenge he may alert Arif that I'm alive. That could be very bad news, not just for me but also for those at the palace who helped me and to whom I owe my life.
