Cecil couldn't have carried me far (unless maybe he had a wheelbarrow or
something similar?), so the edge of the woods shouldn't have been too
distant when I started. But I must have guessed wrong about which way to
go, and I have evidently gone deeper into the forest instead of emerging
from it.
I am getting frantic by now. Lord Richard and Teran must be very worried about me, assuming that they themselves are all right. If they have seen my message, they are likely to have enquired at all the nearby houses by now. But Cecil will no doubt have denied having seen me, and as far as I know nobody else saw me last night between leaving the tavern and arriving at his house. How long will Lord Richard search for me, before giving it up as a bad job and going off with Teran to look for his son? I have managed to knot the straps of my top together, so that it is no longer in imminent danger of coming apart, but that is the end of the good news. I'm tired, hungry and thirsty, and I am getting increasingly hot and sweaty from my long walk and the now rapidly warming morning. Then I stumble across a track. It must lead somewhere. In fact in one direction or the other it is likely to take me back to the village. But which way to go is a toss up - or it would be if I had a coin to toss. I decide that I will go left.
