I take off one of my sandals and, after a few minutes of pulling and
twisting the leather, extract the metal spike from the buckle. I then set
to work on the lock. I'm no locksmith, but as I thought, the lock isn't
very complex. After fiddling with it a few moments, the lock springs and
the door swings open. I did it!
The sandal, unfortunately, is unrepairable. I take the other one off and leave them behind. I close and relock the door behind me. If anyone comes to check on me during the night, they will hopefully see the locked door and not raise an alarm. Quietly as I can, I sneak down the hallway, past the room of the loudly snoring chief and his wife. Stopping in the kitchen to "borrow" some flatbread and dried meat from the pantry, I make my way to the bathroom window. I slide out and find myself outside, behind the chief's house. The town is quiet, the shops and markets are all closed. While the chief's home is in the center of town, it occurs to me that most of the villagers live on the outskirts.
