I briefly consider bypassing the oasis, but even If I make it to the
river by morning, there's no guarantee that a settlement will be anywhere
near there. Maybe these people will be able to help or at least point me
in the right direction. It's risky, but not as risky as doing nothing.
I approach the oasis cautiously, wondering what type of reception I will receive there. There are 4 wagons and a couple of tents set up. The mules are asleep near the water. There is a dying fire near the two tents, and a single person sitting beside it, (probably a night lookout) huddled in blankets. The others, I assume, are in the tents. Hesitating a few moments longer, I finally build up my nerve and enter the encampment, in view of the guard.
