Out of the Frying Pan...

The Black Void - Episode 1880

As soon as the guard sees me, he pulls a whistle from his pocket and blows a piercing blast on it. Half-dressed people quickly emerge from the tents, brandishing swords and guns. Soon I am surrounded.

A black-bearded man, whom I suppose must be their leader, asks me truculently: "Who are you, and why were you spying on us?"

Spying? Do these people have something to hide? Could they be smugglers? Or - worse still from my point of view - bringing in supplies for the facility from which I've so recently escaped?

"I wasn't spying," I say. "I just stumbled on this oasis by accident."

The man laughs. "Oh yes. You just happened to be wandering on your own through the desert. Very likely, I'm sure. Now tell me the truth. Where is your back-up team? I don't suppose that they can be very far away."

Since I can't think of a plausible lie, I decide that telling him the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth is my only option. When I have finished, he says:

  1. "So you escaped from the facility? I wonder how much they will pay us for your return."
  2. "So you escaped from the facility? We have no love for them. You may go."
  3. "That is the most ridiculous tale that I've ever heard."
