Fortunately, the landing went better than I expected. The plane hit the
dune with thud and skids along the soft sand for a few hundred feet,
gradually coming to rest against the side of the sand bank. I still get
jostled in my seat, recieving a couple of bumps and bruises.
I breath a sigh of relief. Any one you can walk away from is a good one, right? Preparing to set out, I grab the plane's emergency kit, which includes a first aid kit, a flashlight, a compass, a flare gun, a (thankfully full) canteen, and some emergency rations. I quickly orient myself west uisng the compass. 10 miles is a long way to walk, especially in the desert heat and sand. It will likely take several hours. Judging by the position of the sun, I can still make it by nightfall if I set out right away.
