"Very funny, kid," drawls the tall man wearing the fedora. He puts the
rope back down through the hole, and holds the other end of the rope,
presumably waiting for Charlie to tug the rope.
"What are you doing?" asks Belle. "Waiting for Charlie to return with the diamonds," comes the reply. Belle stares at the hole, then the tall man's black woolen pants and trenchcoat for a minute. Then she says "You mean that you and Charlie are stealing diamonds?" "That's right, girl." Belle becomes nervous. Surely a robbery is in progress, thinks Belle. I gotta go and tell the police. Belle spots the stairs leading up, out of the basement. She heads to the stairs. As soon as she reaches the foot of the stairs, Cool Hat sas "Come back here, girl. You ain't going nowhere." "Why not?" queries Belle. "Because you are coming with me and Charlie." What does Belle do?
