Blue Potion

"I am sorry that your soul was not completely released from this place," said Fred. "Although it may be selfish of me, I am still glad that at least the shadow of yourself is still in this world."

"You probably say that to all the lady ghosts," Astra said, playfully. "Although I will have to say the flattery is appreciated. And this is a change. Many of my fellow spirits have gone mad from the shock of death, but there are a handful that appear to have kept their wits. By the way, when you get a chance, hold the blue potion up to a strong light and look closely."

"What will I see?"

"I do not know, exactly, but one of my fellow spirits has told me that there is some sort of paint in the glass that can be seen when a bright light is shone upon it, and that might help you figure out what the potion is."

"Thank you, Astra. There was a bright light in the canal's waterway. I do not think that I need to row back - I think that I remember standing on the bank and seeing the potion glow. I will go back and look at the glass closely."

"Let me know what you find. I have a while to spend here, I think, so any mysteries that need to be solved would give me something to do."

Fred took his leave, and headed back to the canal. The potion did indeed start glowing. Fred noticed two things.

The first was that there were dark, regularly spaced lines on the surface of the potion's tube, like those of a measuring cup. The second was an inscription on the bottom of the potion. It read, "For best results, consume two units per hundredweight. Drink direct or soak up in bread and eat. Good for three months."

"The glass tells me how much to drink, but does not tell me what it does," thought Fred.

Fred decided to

1. see if the untethered spirits would have any ideas as to what this potion could be.
2. wait until he could consult a magic user outside the caves.
3. follow the instructions on the bottom of the potion to the best of his understanding.
