The wording made it sound as though the potion would do something beneficial, but Fred decided that there was no rush to drink any. He would delay that until he had consulted Astra and the other untethered spirits, and depending on what they said might decide not to risk it. If he did drink some then he would need to take just over three units, as his weight was a little more than one and a half hundredweight.
It occurred to him that the last part of the inscription was ambiguous. Did it mean that the effect of the potion on someone who quaffed it would persist for three months? Or was it that the potion would remain potent for three months after being put in the bottle? In the latter case, then for all he knew that time might already have expired, rendering the potion useless or - even worse - harmful. No, he decided, that would make little sense. The first interpretation must surely be the right one, for otherwise the inscription would surely have included the date of manufacture. He returned to Astra and the other spirits.
