Although half of what he was saying he was making up as he went along, and
the other half was recycled from a vaguely remembered chronomancy text
from his one year in wizardry school as a young boy, Fred managed to
successfully explain how, if he was convicted, he would never meet Astra
("which I would very much like to do," he admitted, blushing) and
therefore she could never know him and therefore never defend him in this
trial, causing an irreconcilable paradox and threatening the very fabric
of space-time, or at least the fabric of story-continuity.
