Joan Receives an Unwelcome Shock

Joan had a lot to ponder. Presumably Astra was here as a guest of King
Emry, perhaps
ostensibly leading a peace mission whilst plotting with Zular to launch an
imminent
invasion by her amazon forces. Apparently the genuine prophecy had
said that Astra
would fall in love with Fred. If that had happened, presumably Astra might
not
have been willing to go through with the invasion, and so she had hatched
a plot with Zular that
would at least get Fred out of the way and, if all went to plan, turned
into a girl
as well for added reassurance.
On the one hand, Joan thought that she had had a lucky escape from having such a treacherous and ruthless woman fall in love with her (him?). On the other hand, had that happened then Allaria might have been saved. And the princess was rumoured to be incredibly beautiful. But now, Joan knew, she had to go to the king and inform on the plotters. Whilst Belboz might have been in error concerning the main prophecy, about a girl saving the kingdom, she hoped that the secondary prophecy, about someone bearing the statue of the Spirit of Ectasy doing so, might be genuine - or at least that she might be able to convince the king that it was genuine and get him to believe her. Joan had hidden behind a convenient drape as Astra and Zular had passed by, having finished their business in the alcove. When they had gone, she waited a minute or so and then emerged from her hiding place, and hurried towards the door, intent on finding the king. She was about to open it, when it opened from the other side. Standing facing her was a tall beautiful redhead that could only be Princess Astra. Thinking Joan to be merely an illiterate servant-girl, she began: "I left some papers in the alcove. Would you get...?" Then she broke off, staring intently at Joan's face. "By the gods, you're beautiful," she said. "I think I love you!"
