"With the doctored map of the caves you gave him," Joan heard the woman say,
"his fate is sealed." The woman, Joan reflected, was probably one of the
Amazons, and the man, judging from the comment she made, was some high-
ranking official. "Yes," said the male voice, "but what if he finds Bebloz? He knows of the prophecy, does he not? He is something of a specialist in such matters." "That is well in hand, Zular," the woman's voice said. Joan now knew who the man was--Duke Zular. She was not surprised. She had always known that Duke Zular was thoroughly wicked, and should have suspected that he would turn traitor. "You see," the woman continued, "I made sure that he had found a false version of the prophecy's text. He thinks that, to save the kingdom, he has to turn him into a teenage girl!" She laughed wickedly. "Ah, excellent, Princess Astra," said Zular. "You are devious as well as beautiful. I like that in a woman." "If you think that flattery will get you anywhere, you are mistaken. I take compliments from no one." "I see that Frederigo would have a hard time fulfilling the prophecy, even if he were once more a virile man, and knew what the true prophecy was," Zular observed wryly. "It would be," Astra said. "I never seriously thought that I would ever fall in love with him, but I decided I might as well eliminate him, just in case." And she laughed wickedly again.
