Whilst Astra, as a princess of Aqualaria, should in theory have had the
final say,
Anina was the one person apart from her mother whom she had been used to
deferring to
as a child. Astra found that old habits died hard, and she eventually gave
way.
Besides, Anina was sitting in front and had the reins, which meant that
she could decide the
direction that the horse took.
As they rode southwards, Astra asked Anina: "Didn't you think it was strange that we should meet a merchant in such an out of the way place, traveling alone and at night too?" "Perhaps he was a smuggler, hoping to evade the excise men." "In that case, I hope his other horses are swifter than this one. We are hardly going any faster than if we were still on foot." "The horse is having to carry two of us. And it was inevitable that the one we were given would be the worst of the four. At least traveling on horseback is far less tiring than walking." Later that afternoon, having seen no-one as they crossed a wide plain, they came to the bank of a river flowing from west to east. It was not very wide but it was fast-flowing. They could see that the path resumed on the far side.
