Fred's head told him to have nothing to do with Adele; his heart told him
that he could
never bear to leave her. As was usually the case with Fred, his heart won
the argument. He
rationalised it to himself by reflecting that the knightly code of
chivalry said that
he must always help a lady, missing the important point that it had
nothing to say
about whether a knight should accept help from a lady. Fred was
certainly enchanted
by Adele. The only question was whether he was enchanted in the literal
sense of the word
rather than merely the metaphorical one.
"Thank you for your offer," Fred said, "which I gladly accept. Did you have any specific plan in mind?"
