Carola knew she should really have woken the others, and she admitted
afterwards that she had been foolish. Still, if you can't be foolish aged
fourteen then
when can you? She rationalised it to herself by thinking that one
person
would have a better chance of sneaking close enough to see what was going
on without being
detected than would four people. And she did so want to find out who could
possibly be fighting in such
an out-of-the-way spot.
The pass turned sharply to the right a few hundred yards ahead of the point where they had camped, and the sounds of fighting appeared to be coming from somewhere not far beyond that turn. It occurred to Carola that if she could manage to climb the intervening spur, then she might get a good view of the battle without putting herself at risk. Fortunately an almost full moon had recently risen, so she would have enough light to be able to make the climb without undue risk. She managed to climb the spur without mishap and got to a position where she could look down on the pass as it wound round the far side. Below her she saw in the moonlight:
