The path wound steadily upwards as they began to climb into the foothills
of the mountains. Any trade that came this way would probably be by means
of trains of
pack-mules, as the route was too narrow and rough for wagons or horses. It
was
a brilliantly clear day, and they could see that some
miles ahead the route went through a pass between two high peaks. "Do you
think
we'll get through the pass and down to lower ground before nightfall?"
Belinda
asked Matthias. "I doubt it," he said. "The air is so clear here that
distances can be
deceptive. I reckon it's getting on for fifteen miles from here to the
pass. And that's
as the crow flies. As the path winds, it will probably be more like
twenty - and almost
all of it uphill.
Matthias's estimate proved to be accurate. The sun set just as they entered the pass, still a mile or two short of the highest point of the path. They made camp, since the way was too rough for it to be safe to travel after dark. There had been no sign of danger during the hours of daylight. Perhaps it would be different at night? They decided that they would take turns to keep watch, with the others being woken if there should be any sign of trouble.
