The two who rescued Belinda and Carola did not even intend to do so. In
fact, they weren't even out to stop the Dragon. They had just taken a
wrong turn. Their quest was to stop an evil mage. Belinda and Carola's
unexpected rescuers were two young men, a wizard and a warrior. Neither
was feeling particularly good at the moment. "I told you to turn left at that fork in the road, but did you listen? No, you always have to act like you know what you're doing. Just because you're a big shot magic user doesn't mean you're always right." The man who said that was the warrior, or at any rate warrior-in-training, Matthias Fyregryphon. He was a handsome young man of about 19. "If you had listened to me and tried to reach Vaeren's tower via the mountains instead of the forest, we wouldn't be having this problem! And anyway, I'm a seventh son of a seventh son, so i'm supposed to have infallible intuition." The one who said that was Jarlath D'Honaire, the wizard-in-training. He was about four years younger than Matthias, and was, by an interesting coincidence, the brother of Fredrigo D'Honaire. The road they had been taking had petered out. They had been walking for the forest, lost, for days. At last, they reached something that looked like a road. There was a group of people walking on it. Matthias looked closer. "It looks like some of the Dragon's servants, with two young women about our age imprisoned by them." "Are you thinking what I'm thinking?" asked Jarlath. "Depends on what you're thinking," responded Matthias. "We should rescue those girls. Becoming full-fledge heroes, as opposed to just heroes-in- training, isn't easy. Rescuing these damsels could get us better reputation and even extra credit at Hero School. Besides, those are mightily attractive damsels." Matthias sighed. "Whatever happened to good old altruism?" "That too," said Jarlath. "So what are we waiting for? Let's save them!"
