"I feared as much," said Belinda with a sigh. "That you have a warrior
rabbit with you
strongly suggested that was the case. One thing puzzles me, though. We are
only a mile away from where we came
out of the caverns. Why didn't you take us back by that route?" "You must
have escaped via
the sewers, then. You didn't really want to go back that way, did
you? No, we shall
be going back via the main entrance, which we will reach early tomorrow
morning
after resting the night here."
"What will the dragon do with us now?" Carola asked. "I don't know, but he is not best pleased that you managed to escape, so he is unlikely to be merciful. Perhaps he will turn you into bunny girls." And he laughed at his own joke. The girls were given a spartan meal, and then the men turned in for the night with the exception of the warrior rabbit left on guard. The girls appeared to have no chance of escape, for each had one ankle chained to a stake which had been driven deep into the ground. Now that the sun had set, it was turning chilly, and the girls shivered in their lightweight dresses, which to make things worse were still damp from having been washed.
