Not a Wizard but a Witch

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 88836

"Sorry I've been so long, Astra," Fred said cheerfully. "I was afraid that you'd be up to your waist in... you know... by now."

"Hello, Fred. I seem to be under some spell that prevents many of my bodily functions from... well, functioning. I don't appear to need food or water, and nothing comes out the other end. I don't get fatigued from standing here. And my hair and nails haven't grown. So how long has it been? And who is your companion?"

"Four weeks. It was a long journey. I managed to find the house where the Wizard of Kamiro was supposed to live, but it turned out that he has recently retired and moved away, and nobody knew where he'd gone. This is his successor, who has become the Witch of Kamiro, She has been good enough to agree to try to free you. She has inherited all the Wizard's spell books."

"Hello," the young woman said. "Please call me Ingrid." She was dressed in male attire, as was only sensible when one was clambering about in a cave system. She was quite pretty, not at all like a stereotypical witch.

Astra found herself liking Ingrid, but wondered if she would be powerful enough to break the spell on the chains. However it would have been rather rude to question her ability, so she merely said: "Hello. I'm Astra. Pleased to meet you. What happened to Velus?"

Ingrid smiled. "I managed to return him to his human form. He's gone back home. Well, I suppose I'd better get started, and see if I can destroy your chains. I should warn you that, assuming that I succeed, there could be some side effects. You see, it's almost certainly the magic in the chains that has been responsible for stopping certain of your metabolic functions. Once they restart, it could take a while for them to settle down to their normal rate. For example, you could find yourself ravenously hungry for a while, so we've brought plenty of food. Or you might find that your hair and nails grow explosively for a short time. I can't predict it with any confidence, however, and it's possible that nothing at all out of the ordinary will occur. Now where did I put that spell book..."

She rummaged around in her pack, before pulling out a surprisingly small book. She turned to the correct page, then said: "Ready?"

"Very much so."

Ingrid made some arcane gestures, while reading an incantation that sounded like gobbledygook to Astra.

  1. The spell works.
  2. Nothing appears to happen.
  3. The dragon has incorporated a booby-trap in the magic on the chains, to take effect if anyone tries to tamper with his spell.
