Allarians were distrustful of magic, and a talking raven clearly had to be a magical bird. So Fred kept his sword in his hand as he asked it: "Why should we leave?" (Not that he had any intention of staying. With his men, the horses and supplies all gone, there would be little point. But perhaps he might learn something of use.)

"Because if you don't leave at once, you will suffer the same fate as your men."

"What do you know of that? Were you responsible?"

"No...

  2. "I was one of your men. You see, we were all turned into ravens. I am - or was - Eric, your page. If you don't depart right away, the same transformation is likely to happen to you and the lady."
  3. "The wizard who is at this very moment approaching you from behind was responsible. If you'd left the instant I warned you, you might just have been in time to escape."
