And with that, the mysterious raven took into the air again, flying off
into the blameless blue yonder with an effortlessness that is the envy of
many an earthbound man. Fred was in full battle mode now. The day had brought many strange omens.... First, his map (drawn by the most renowned cartographer in Allaria), had been worthless. There were two bloody entrances to the Southern Caves!? Mayhaps it wasn’t the map maker’s fault. The D’Honaires had been venturing this way for seven generations now, and not once had Fred heard any mention of there being two such entrances. Even his father, a renowned dragon hunter himself, had never informed him of such a ‘fact’. Then there had been the mysterious light, which he had avoided, but was still a thorn wedged deep in his mind. This, of course, was followed by his encounter with princess Yaivaine (and the drama that ensued, and still might, from that little encounter), and the strange golden monkey statues thereafter. Then the sounds. Oddities abounded. And now this.Heeding the raven’s warning, he turned around, sword drawn, to face whatever ‘wizard’ might dare cross his path. Sure enough, a figure appeared on the very cave-bound trail he (and many a D’Honaire), had trod. “Princess, I must insist that you take cover in the woods,” Fred said in a hoarse whisper.“Nonsense,” came her reply. “I know who this ‘wizard’ is.” “Oh?”“Indeed. I’m afraid I haven’t been very honest with you, either. It’s nothing personal. Um, that’s the thing, though...you see...well, I might as well go on and say it....that’s my ex-lover Gregor who approaches.” Fred was aghast! “You mean the ‘late, great Gregor!?” he sputtered. The princess blushed. “Well,” she stammered, “not so much ‘late’ as he is ‘great’. It’s all very complicated...” “Why did you lie to me!?”“It’s complicated! I was going to tell you the truth, once we got far enough away from those dreadful caves....” Fred was growing angrier by the second. “I want an explanation and I want it NOW!” he demanded. “What happened to my men!?”“Oh, they’re probably alright. In a better place, you know. I’m not sure who that raven was, though. Kinda spooky, if you ask me.” “IN A BETTER PLACE!?” Fred thundered, the veins in his neck bulging. “Who are you and what is going on!?” “I’m the daughter of your King!” she insisted. “And I want nothing more than to get away from this horrid entanglement! Gregor and the dragon are in league, you see. Sometimes I wonder if they’re not the same person. It’s a long story. Oh, this is all happening so fast...”By now the wizard was nearly upon them. He looked like your average, run-of-the-mill wizard: flowing purple robes, pointy hat, staff in hand, golden pouch at his waist, etc. Except that this fellow lacked the long white beard(and was in fact clean-shaven) and looked to be middle-aged. His smile was friendly and his keen, baby-blue eyes were warm and wizened. He looked quite harmless. Fred, however, was still on guard as he sized him up.“Damn you, Gregor!” the princess spat. “Why can’t you just leave me alone! You obsessive CREEP!” “That’s MY child in your belly!” the wizard responded, halting his advance at about twenty paces. His smile was gone now. “How dare you try to escape, you deceitful woman! Where do you plan on running, to? Hmm? Who do you think will take you in!? This poor chump? What lies have you filled his head with, I wonder? He doesn’t know, does he? He doesn’t know what you’ve done!”“Frederigo is my new lover!” The words fell effortlessly from her lips, startling both men. “What?” the two said in unison.“That’s right!” she drove on. “You’ll have to go through him before you have a chance at me. I told him everything! EVERYTHING! What’s more - he’s the most renowned knight in the realm. He can kick your ass, that’s for sure!” “Now see here!” Fred broke in, struggling to find the words that alluded him at the moment. “I never actually agreed to the...arrangement....you offered. That’s beside the point. I have no intention of getting caught up in this petty quarrel. Where are my men!? One of you had better have an answer!”
