Enter, the Raven

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 88039

Both the princess and Fred took in a deep lung full of the crisp, alpine air and basked in the warm rays of the sun as their eyes adjusted to the daylight.

They did not tarry long, however, spurred on partly by the unsettling noise behind them and the fact that this was, after all, the very doorstep of the Dragon’s Den. The bones of other unlucky souls lay strewn about the area, a clear reminder of the danger they still faced.

They made their way down a steep, winding trail that meandered through the tall pine forest until they came to the meadow where Lord Fred’s squires had setup camp with his horses and provisions. It was a good spot, far enough from the caves to not draw any attention but close enough to allow a quick escape. Unfortunately, the spot was completely deserted....without a trace.

Fred’s flabber was absolutely gasted, as the old Geldan saying went. He was befuddled, in other words. And understandably so. He had left the camp intact mere hours before - in the capable hands of his trustworthy squires and household knights!

He stood there, still as a shadowed steingeweser - his mouth agape, his mind reeling, and his lower digestive track in turmoil (last night had been taco night).

The princess became worried. “Uh, Fred....are you okay?” she asked.

Fred snapped out of his momentary lapse and apologized to the princess (and perhaps, just maybe, his future wife). “This is most unsettling,” he explained. “By Rhom, I swear! My most trusted men were stationed here, along with my strongest steeds and supplies enough to last a month! I left them mere hours ago and yet it is as if they were never here!”

“That is most perplexing,” mused princess Yaiviane. “And look!” She pointed toward an enormous raven, perched on the gnarled old limbs of a long dead tree, regarding them silently. It took to the air and circled above them ominously, riding a gust of wind. This continued for several minutes. The wind blowing through the pines above was the only sound to break the spell of silence that had befallen them.

The raven continued circling until, almost suddenly, it swept downwards and landed but a few feet ahead of them. Fred reached for his sword, though he wasn’t quite sure why. The princess, in turn, fell behind the knight and clutched his arm for safety.

The Raven, emanating a brooding air, spoke:

  1. “Nevermore.”
  2. “Leave this place!”
  3. “Why, Hello!”
  4. Ravens can't talk! The bird merely cawed incoherently. Bloody nuisance!
