Fred had been taught that he should come to the aid of a damsel in
distress. That applied even more strongly when that damsel was a member
of the royal family to whom he owed allegiance. But if he consented then
he would be party to a deception, and the chief person who would be
deceived was King Emry, to whom he owed the greatest allegiance of all.
He tried to put out of his mind the fact that if he did what Yaiviane wanted he would be marrying a beautiful young woman, and that he would probably be made a prince of the realm. That was if Yaiviane's assessment of her father's temper was correct, of course. If he proved to be less forgiving than she thought, then Fred might find himself exiled or even executed. A noise from deep within the caves interrupted his thoughts. The dragon or his minions, come looking for their escaped prisoner? Fred was glad to have an excuse to postpone making a decision. "We can discuss this further on the journey back to Camelyn," he said. He took the princess's hand and started heading for the cave exit.
