Fred was floored by the Princess' proposal. Finally, he picked his jaw off
the floor and sputtered "Princess Yaiviane, think about what you're saying!
How do you expect this to work? If your father thinks that I fathered your
child, unmarried, he will surely have me banished, and strip the House
D'Honaire of our lands and titles!"
Yaiviane smiled. "You don't know my father as well as I do. He has built himself a reputation as a strict monarch. It serves him well to keep his nobles and knights respectful, and at times fearful. But in truth he's quite tolerant, especially where his children are concerned. I think after three years away, he'll be so happy to have me back home he will allow us a little leeway. We can claim to have had an ill-advised moment of passion after you rescued me from the dragon." Fred's mind was reeling. Even with the king's tacit approval, it would bring great scandal to the royal household, not to mention House D'Honaire - if it became known that Fred and Yaiviane had conceived a child whilst they were unwed. And yet this would just be a lie to cover up an even greater, unthinkable scandal. "Princess, don't you realize what you are asking? You are proposing marriage! Are you certain you want this? You don't even know me!" "I'm the youngest of Emry's children." Yaiviane said. "I am not in line for the throne. I was destined for an arranged marriage at some point anyway. I'd just as soon marry you as any suitor my father would choose. I don't know why, but even though we've only just met, I feel I can trust you with my life, Fred." Yaiviane said, blushing. Fred felt himself blush a little too. "I suppose I should take that as a compliment!" Yaiviane laughed. "Yes, you should!" She then sighed. "What Gregor and I shared was wonderful. I want to keep this baby because it's all I have left of him now. Lenient though my father is, if he ever knew the truth of my absence, and of my child's lineage, it would not go well for us." "Princess..." "Listen, Fred. I may never be in love with you as I was with Gregor, but in time I think we could grow fond of each other."
