Stacy was amazed at how far they had risen in a minute or so. The ground already looked a very long way away. Yet the g-forces hadn't been that bad, in spite of the shaking they had experienced. Perhaps the ship had some sort of anti- gravity device? Such speculation was brushed away by the realisation that the other ship, which had inirially been left well behind by the suddenness of their take-off, was now closing rapidly.

  1. Then it fired on them.
  2. Then it enveloped them in a beam of brilliant light.
  3. When it had closed to perhaps half a mile behind them, it matched its speed to theirs and maintained the same separation.
