The Kaleidoscope of the Caves

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 8398

A kaleidoscope has a jumble of fragments. The viewer may recognize pieces – maybe a little silver star, or a red piece of glass, but these objects are reflected, inverted and deformed by the kaleidoscope's mirrors, and a turn of the eyepiece jumbles the objects into a somewhat different pattern. The very nature of reality of the Dragon’s Cave, whether it was a result of chance, design, or some interplay between the two, was kaleidoscopic

Fred arrived at the cave with two entrances, and chose to go left. Fred advanced into the darkness, and held his nerve as a bear appeared. He was able to shoo it away. Next he found a stream of lava, and followed it to its end. He then saw a Lava Man briefly, but this time did not hold his nerve and ran away, losing track of his place. By the time he regained his nerve, he found himself at a cross passage, with a choice of passages that offered aural cues – signing, running water, silence, and a woman’s cry for help. He went toward the cry for help.

From Fred’s point of view, the woman, Melissa, was not from any place he recognized, and was understandably disturbed. She claimed that some magic had transported her from her home to his place, which made as much sense as any other explanation that he could think of. Then he heard the dragon laugh. There was an interlude of darkness, followed by a shorter interlude of foggy white and the kaleidoscope turned again.

Fred now found himself in a large room, but was inconvenienced by chains around his wrists and ankles which were fettered to the stone wall. He did have to admit as far as confinement went, that while the conditions were not those that a gentleman would impose on a captive of his rank, that they certainly could be worse. The dungeon was clean, he did have two feet of slack in the chain and could move that much, and there was some form of light from an ball that depended from the ceiling. Poor Melissa had fainted, but appeared to be breathing normally and not in any danger. Fred was looking at the oddly designed door, and thinking about what he could do next, when his heart skipped a beat. The door was swinging open! He followed his gut, and bent down one knee to the floor. There was enough slack in the manacles to allow it. Protect Melissa, who was helpless! And lower his center of gravity as much as possible. He looked up.

Fred's mouth dropped open, and he didn't speak. The face was easy to recognize. He saw it on coins all the time. The King himself, or at least someone in the royal family. But what was he doing here?

"You may rise, Sir Fred," said the man. "As much as you are able to."

"As Your Highness wills," said Fred, rising as much as he could. "What do you wish me to do?"

"For now, nothing. But I know that you have a question. How did I get here?"

Fred answered, "If you wish to tell me."

  1. The King was teleported here, similar to what happened to Melissa.
  2. The King had entered the caves of his own free will, just like Fred.
  3. The King was now a prisoner, just like Fred, but had a little more freedom of the caves due to his rank.
