Stacy didn't want to risk antagonising the aliens. Apart from any other consideration, they might be able to restore her memory. So she reluctantly assented to Paula leaving. When Paula had gone, the door closed. The alien who had spoken before - perhaps he was their leader or perhaps he was the only one fully to have mastered English - said:

  1. "Now, how would you like a short joy-ride?"
  2. "How was your trip to New York? Did you get the blood sample analysed?"
  3. "I have some rather bad news for you. We discovered that a malfunction in a piece of our equipment meant that one of the tests we did on you may have been dangerous."
  4. "I have some good news for you. Your request for permission to return with us to our home planet has been approved."
  5. "You may have been wondering about the other spacecraft. That was our mother ship."
