"Before I help Astra, I should make sure that Adele cannot interfere," Elaine said. "She could come round from the sleep spell at any moment. I don't want her using her magic against me."

Fred supposed that was fair enough, but he felt uneasy. "You aren't planning to do anything too drastic, are you?" he asked.

"No, of course not."

"I don't want you doing anything to Adele at all," Matthias protested.

Elaine looked annoyed. "Be silent, stupid boy," she said, and gestured at Matthias. The boy opened his mouth, presumably to protest, but no sound came out. His shocked expression left no-one in any doubt that Elaine had taken away his voice.

1. Fred, Astra and Exotica looked at one another uneasily, but evidently none of them felt that confronting Elaine would be wise.
2. Exotica had continued to hang back on the edge of the group, and Elaine may have thought that she had nothing to fear from that quarter. Now she picked up a largish rock and threw it as hard as she could at Elaine's head.
3. "Please take off the ring, Elaine," Fred said. "You may not realise it, but I think that it's having a bad effect on you." "But if I take it off, then there's no hope for Astra or Sigin," Elaine pointed out.
4. Adele started to come round.
