Discretion is the Better Part of Valour

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 81683

If he had been on his own, Fred might have fought the monsters, being perhaps braver than was altogether wise. But he couldn't see how he could do that while protecting Glenda. But if they could reach the cave entrance, he could get the girl behind him to enable him to protect her. Also, at that size, they would only be able to come at him one at a time in the confined space of the tunnel.

So he yelled "Run for the cave!" and they sprinted back towards the entrance.

The girl proved to be a good runner. Luckily, even though they hadn't been able to retrieve her clothes, her feet were protected by Fred's loaned bedshoes, or they would have been cut to ribbons.

At their great size, the dragonhounds ate up the ground rapidly.

  1. But Fred and Glenda managed to reach the cave entrance just ahead of them.
  2. Fred realioed that they weren't going to make it. "You run on," he panted, "and I'll try to delay them." He hoped that some of them wouldn't go after the girl, ignoring him.
  3. Suddenly the leading dragonhound was fried by a lightning bolt. High on a ridge overlooking the glen they spotted their deliverer, a cloaked figure who must surely be a powerful mage or sorceress.
