Velus was delighted on learning the news, and ran around excitedly
shouting: "I'm going to be a father! Someone give me a cigar." (Not that
he had ever even seen a cigar, still less smoked one, and of course there
were none on the island.)
Meanwhile, Astra had been reflecting on Alfred's lecture on the dangers of inbreeding. "At least my unborn child should be all right," she said. "I mean, there's no way that I could be related, even distantly, to Velus." "Perhaps not," Alfred said. "But on the other hand, he's still not back to being one hundred per cent human. Astra frowned unhappily, but then decided to try to put the doubt that Alfred had raised out of her mind, since it wasn't something that she could do anything about. Another couple of months pass.
