In a jail cell in a very rural town somewhere in the middle of nowhere,
Sara and Jasper can't believe they were arrested.
"I can understand the gasoline theft, but who knew you needed a license to
mummify somebody," Jasper says after the deputy keeping an eye on them is
out of sight. "This must be some kind of weird state!" Fifteen minutes later, and clearly showing that the author has absolutely no idea how things like this work in the real world, Sara and Jasper are out on bail. They still have most of their stash, which is close to a half million dollars. Who knew that visitors from another world would not only have access to American currency out in space (and LOTS of it to boot!), but they would be gullible enough to happily fork over the ridiculous amounts of money that Sara was charging them back at the filling station?
"Where should we go now, Sara?" Jasper asks as they briskly walk away from
the police station in the small town. The two Hewitt cousins are probably
the only signs of life in the tiny central business district right now.
Sara and Jasper have found themselves at the small town's center, the intersection between a state route going north to south, and the U.S. highway going east to west. A gas station was on one corner, with a tavern right across the street from it. The bar was still open, but there only seemed to be three people inside, counting the bartender. On another corner was an office building, and Starbucks was the only thing open on that side of the street. On the fourth corner, an all-night diner sat. Things were pretty slow there, too. Now what?
