"Thank you," said Stacy, wondering just how frank she could afford to be
with the man
and his sister. Although Stacy was apparently a rich woman, she knew her
money wouldn't go far
if she was taken to court and had to pay the woman damages.
Once the man had found and purchased a book about amnesia (and Stacy had decided that it couldn't hurt if she bought a copy for herself), the man - whose name was Donald - gave her a lift to his home on the outskirts of the city. On the way, he told Stacy how his sister had been given a course of a highly experimental drug a few months ago. Apparently she had first been required to sign an undertaking not to sue under any circumstances, which came as a relief to Stacy. A week or so ago she had paid him a visit and, as luck would have it, the morning before she had been due to go home she had woken up with total amnesia. He had not as yet told the authorities, hoping that she might regain her memory and not wanting to see her put into an institution. When they arrived at Donald's house:
