In her mind's eye, Stacy suddenly had a completely clear picture of some
past
occasion. She could see Hooker standing in front of a chalkboard full
of equations. It was in a lecture theatre somewhere. Hooker must
have been one of her college lecturers, she supposed. Better still, on the
wall was a noticeboard,
and on it was a large poster advertising in capital letters the "YALE
MATHEMATICS SOCIETY".
So now she knew not only that she had got her Doctorate from MIT [6230]
but her first
degree (presumably) from Yale.
What she had remembered was not only helpful in itself, but it gave her hope that it might be the first step in a gradual return of her memory. Stacy was so pleased that it was all she could do to retain a poker face, but she knew that to do so was essential. It appeared that she had managed to convince Hooker that no further measures were called for, for he said:
