Jimmy, Melanie and Carol said goodbye, and left for Socorro. Stacy would
be getting a
taxi back to her motel after she had seen the oculist. She did wonder
whether she would be better off
basing herself in Albuquerque until Susan left hospital. However she
decided to postpone a
decision on that until she knew how long it would be before Susan went
home.
Stacy tracked down the oculist's, then found somewhere nearby to have lunch, and turned up promptly for her 2:30 appointment. The first thing that the oculist asked her was whether she had any records from a previous eye test. When Stacy said no, he pointed out that this meant that, whilst he could determine what her eyesight was like now, he might be unable to tell whether or not it was deteriorating. He also asked her how old she was. "Twenty-five," she said, guessing. "I'd expect your eyesight to be fairly stable at that age," he told her. "If you have good vision without glasses now, I'd expect no real change for ten years or more." After a thorough examination, the oculist told Stacy:
