Tarai Laea. The name suddenly popped into his head. The old mage travelled
widely in his later years, and wrote a book on it. Tarai Laea was a country
beyond the Tarel Ocean known for making life-like creatures - like the
rook, he realised. He made his way over to Fred and Astra. An annoyed Fred flung the dart at the circling rook and through luck more than anything hit it in the breast. The dart partially penetrated before coming loose and falling back to earth with a clatter. The rook righted itself before continuing its endless rotations. Fred took this as a personal affront to him and started throwing stones at the rook, trying to bring it down. The fact that he kept missing empathised the fact that his dart throw had been a fluke, which made it much worse. Some of the stones entered through the tower windows, causing startled rooks to fly out. One ricocheted off the stone wall and almost hit Astra, causing her to go over to him and grab his arm. "Fred, stop it! You're acting like a child!" He dropped the stone he was going to throw and sighed heavily. "You're right, I'm sorry." An amused chuckle announced to them that Manathus had arrived. They turned to face him. "I gather you've realised by now that the rook isn't real. It is, in fact, a hydraulically-powered artificial construct designed to emulate a living organism." He smiled inwardly when he got the expected blank looks from the pair. He'd lost them at 'hydraulically', he knew.
