hands on it," Manathus told Fred and Astra. "I could learn much from a
detailed examination. Tell me, is either of you any
good with a crossbow?"
"It was one of the martial arts that I received training in back home, though I'm rather out of practice," Astra said. "You want me to try to bring the thing down? I suppose that if it doesn't have the wit to keep well away when it sees me with a crossbow, then I would have a fair chance, assuming that I had a sufficient supply of bolts. Wouldn't doing that risk damaging it to the extent that you could no longer learn much from it, though? If I manage to bring it down, then hitting the stone flags of the courtyard from a height of fifty to one hundred feet is unlikely to do it much good." "I think that is a risk that I will have to take, as I can't think of a viable alternative. Unless one of you has a better idea?"
