Though controlling, or even influencing, animals through magic was very
difficult - their minds were insufficiently developed - Manathus
eventually became impatient enough to make the attempt. He would try to
heighten the rook's natural love of shiny things to the point where it
would take the bait.
He reached out his mind to the creature, but was puzzled when he could detect nothing. He switched his attention to one of the other rooks, as a test. Sure enough, though its mind was weak there was no difficulty in detecting that mind. So why couldn't he "see" the mind of the rook that he was interested in? Because it didn't have a mind to detect, he realised. Or at least not a mind of the sort that a living creature had. So it wasn't a living creature. That would explain how it could have been around for hundreds of years. So what was it?
