Trying to Catch the Rook

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 75140

"If I were able to capture the rook using magic, don't you think I already would have done so?" Manathus said tartly. "But we're wasting time." With a click of his fingers, the pair find themselves outside, and fortunately dressed in more appropriate attire. They're standing next to the tower Manathus mentioned, and looking up, they can see the rook that flies around it.

Astra positions herself so that it's more likely to catch the rooks attention, while Fred stands nearby, dart at the ready.

And so they wait.

Around an hour later, the pair of them are getting rather bored. Despite Manathus' assurance, the rook doesn't seem to be taking much notice of the nice shiny necklace and pendant. It catches the attention of some of the others, however, and Astra has to fend them off.

Yet another hour - or was it more? - passes. It becomes clear to the pair that, while the old mage had deliberately made the rook easily identifiable by having it fly around the tower, he had also managed to remove its natural curiosity with shiny things. Well, it would seem natural for them to believe that, perhaps. The reality was quite a bit different.

As Fred had mentioned, it wasn't quite so easy to manipulate animals as it was humans. The mage visited a distant land where they were capable of making life-like automatons of almost anything living you'd care to mention. Except humans, and anything smaller than a field mouse, but that still left quite a wide scope for them to cover. When it came to birds, the most difficult part was giving the wings a natural fluid movement. It was tricky, but doable.

  1. Manathus, watching from afar, cottons on to the fact that something's not quite right.
  2. The old mage had slipped up. The magic keeping the automaton flying after all those years fails, and it plummets to the ground.
